Day 16: No Two Days Are the Same

Casey Madura 2016

Well I can’t believe it is already the start of the third week of MSBA 2016! The first two weeks flew by, and I am so excited to see what the rest of the summer has in store! Today, I started off my morning by going on a nice run in Central Park, which is conveniently located a few blocks from our awesome EHS housing. Then, it was off to work with my commuting buddies, Meghan and Carson. After another thrilling subway ride, I walked up out of Penn Station and into my office building at 2 Penn Plaza. Working for Madison Square Garden has been a dream come true and no two days of work are the same. The exciting and welcoming atmosphere was exactly what I was looking for in my MSBA internship.

Today, most of my morning was spent researching different prices for items to go into a Rangers goody bag for an upcoming event. Then, it was off to lunch with some of the other interns that I work with (shout out to intern row!). We decided to try Broadway Bites, a row of various food stops along Broadway, and it was delicious! After a scrumptious lunch it was back to work, where I had to enter guests names into our CRM database for another upcoming event – only this time it was for the New York Liberty! If you don’t know what CRM is do not worry because the term frightened me at first too. After developing the skill, I learned it was really nothing to be scared about: it stands for Customer Relationship Management, and it’s a tool that keeps track of our customer relations within MSG.

Once work was over, it was back on the subway to head back to the housing to hear from the one and only Lorne Segall, who was giving us an Online Etiquette Workshop. It was so great to hear how our AWESOME Program Director broke into the sports industry. Lorne gave us great advice from the knowledge he gained working with Gatorade, Lagardère Sports, and Leverage Agency. He is a fascinating presenter and a great role model for all of us students at MSBA. Once we heard about his start and story it was time to learn about how “online perception is reality”. This means that how you brand yourself online is how people will see you, and because it is online you don’t really have the opportunity to defend yourself. That was the most important takeaway for me because Lorne told us how to execute the perfect balance of being yourself while still being professional. It is easy to lean one way or the other in this balancing act, but the tips that Lorne provided gave us confidence to be ourselves online in a polished manner.

Lorne finished his Workshop by giving us a crash course on LinkedIn. I found this very beneficial because I did not know the “status quo” of LinkedIn because I am so new to the professional world. Having someone guide me through the “dos and don’ts” of LinkedIn was extremely helpful, and they are lessons that I will carry with me throughout my career. Of course, you know if Lorne is presenting you are guaranteed to laugh; we were falling out of our chairs when he had us play a game of “Swipe Left and Swipe Right” based on our social media profiles to close out the night. Overall, it was another incredible day and I am thrilled to see what is coming our way for the rest of the summer!
