Day 40: You Got SWERVED

Melanie Rose 2015

Given the dense MSBA Programming, it’s always refreshing to switch up the normal routines and schedules that have been put in place for us this summer. I’ve loved getting exposure to all the different career paths in the industry, talented professionals, and unique opportunities during our weekly programming, but when I heard about Thursday’s schedule, I couldn’t wait until the day arrived.

“This was a perfectly planned evening that was a great opportunity to hang out together and get our minds off of everything.”

To break the mold of standard MSBA Workshops and Speaker Series, this Thursday the MSBA gang took their talents to SWERVE Fitness. This event was the second of three Mentor/Mentee activities, with the first being the Kickoff during week one, and the last being our Commencement Celebration during the final week. SWERVE Fitness is a team inspired cycling studio that separates you into three teams to compete against others for the most active score. We all got paired with our mentors, or a supervisor/colleague from work if someone’s mentor couldn’t make it, to get into that team mentality. Everyone was really looking forward to the opportunity to dress down in gym shorts and t-shirts and have some fun!

A group of us departed EHS with our gym bags and sneakers (minus Riche who failed to bring any workout gear to America) and headed down to 18th Street to get the night started. Prepped with jugs of Gatorade drinks and energy bars before the workout, everyone was able to get ready, mingle, and reconnect with their mentors in the lobby. My mentor, Jeff Farmer, who works in Partnership Marketing for the New York Mets, has been an incredible person to get to know and learn from throughout the summer. Therefore, although Jeff and I were unsure about how much success we were going to have at SWERVE, we were both excited to work together and put our endurance and fitness to the test!

Luckily, we were able to coordinate with Danny and his mentor who also works for the Mets, Dan Gaiman, so we could sport some New York Mets baseball hats for the event. Did we look pretty intimidating? I’d say so. But it didn’t help as much as we thought it would since our team came in second place. I’m not bitter, I promise. Regardless of scores and winning, it was still a lot of fun to get competitive with everyone in the program, while also getting a pretty legitimate workout in! After the class, I was dripping in sweat and feeling like I had just biked to Wyoming and back. I knew that my lower half was going to hate me for the rest of the week, but it was all worth it.

After everyone changed and showered, we all headed to SideBar down the street to keep the good vibes going and have some fun together. It was a tiring and late night, but one that I know I’ll remember for a long time. This was a perfectly planned evening that was a great opportunity to hang out together and get our minds off of everything career, internship, and MSBA related. I love every single day in this city, so getting to try new things like SWERVE, especially with all the amazing people in this program, has made me extremely grateful to be here for this unforgettable summer.
